Environmentally safe cleaners and lubricants for firearms   by Nraguncare

With the growing trend towards green products, for the firearms industry, hazardous materials are being pushed off the market. In fact, Canada has already begun to target solvents that are deemed unsafe for consumers. The government is also seeking out more thorough documentation from the makers of such products. That, in effect, deters the manufacture and sale of products that are sold without proper labeling, and adequate disclosure of ingredients.

New firearms lubricant and cleaner technologies are providing viable alternatives to traditional solvents and petroleum formulas. For lubricants, greases and oils that are synthetic or even organic in origin are becoming more popular. And for cleaners, water-based enzymatic cleaners are making their way on store shelves. Shipping regulations and restrictions have also become a factor for manufacturers and retailers alike. As is, the U.S. Postal Service, Fedex and UPS do not ship aerosols, also known as pressurized cans due to their potentially flammable nature. Instead, ground shipping is required.

Aerosols have been popular among American consumers for many years because of convenience. You see it everywhere with applications as diverse as air fresheners to suntan lotion. When it comes to lubricating rifles, shotguns and pistols, hunters often find it easier to quickly spray hardware down instead of having to detail strip parts. But the same could also be said for fixing and squeaky door hinge in the house.

So, if environmentally safe products are not just a fad, which they aren’t at this point, sportsman need to seek out the best and safest products available, whether it be a gun lube or a bore cleaner. Mil-Comm Products, in conjunction with the National Rifle Association under the NRA Gun Care brand, offers a portfolio of such products in different sizes, including plastic pump spray and dropper bottles, and handy plastic syringes. Their TW25B® grease is used widely by the U.S. Military for everything from machine guns on Apache Longbow helicopters and F-15 fighters, to Hummer mounted machine guns and sniper rifles.

Sig Sauer Grows in U.S. Market

Sig Sauer, the German manufacturer of firearms, including semi-automatic pistols and rifles, was awarded a major supply contract from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2004. More recently, that reputation for superior reliability translated into groundbreaking contract awards from the U.S. Army Material Command, and the U.S. Navy, which had been purchasing Sig Sauer pistols originally only for the Special Operations Command (SOCOM), which includes the famed SEALs. Today, Sig Sauer has a major market share of the U.S. law enforcement market with contracts with a long list of Federal agencies, cities and other municipalities. The 9mm caliber is most popular, but Sig Sauer is securing procurement for 40 caliber and 45 caliber configurations as well.

The Sig Sauer stainless steel models, as is the case with other gun makers, relies on more care than polymer gripped pistols. The company includes a sample pack of TW25B grease within every pistol box, and users are told to treat their firearms with the lubricant protectant for regular use and storage purposes. Another leading manufacturer, Glock, pre-coats its guns with a proprietary treatment to prevent corrosion, though it does come with an abrasive grease inside, on the rails for break-in purposes. All of their models have a black finish, and are more versatile to accept accessories.

With a lighter frame, the Glock has many fans. However, the trade-off is having to deal with more kick. The Sig Sauer is typically heavier, made with more parts, and offers a more stable platform. Sig Sauer manufacturers product in the U.S. now, as Glock is still developing and American manufacturing capability. Meanwhile, Sig Sauer has grown market share and is clearly the leading semi-automatic pistol competitor to Glock in the U.S., as other brands such as Smith & Wesson, Beretta and Springfield have lagged behind. Each brand has its following, but Sig Sauer is on a roll.
